The India Meteorological Department says favourable conditions will help the southwest monsoon advance across Delhi

June 30, 2026: The southwest monsoon has advanced into additional parts of Madhya Pradesh while covering the remaining regions of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD stated that the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently passes through Surat, Indore, Sagar, Sidhi, Azamgarh, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Dehradun, and Mandi, indicating that areas south of this line have already witnessed the arrival of monsoon rains.

The weather department said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further over the next two to three days. It is expected to spread across the remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, and the northern Arabian Sea. The forecast is expected to bring relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions across several parts of North India, including the national capital.

Despite a delayed onset, the southwest monsoon is now progressing faster than usual. The IMD noted that the current pace may allow the monsoon to cover the entire country close to or even ahead of its normal schedule. The timely arrival of rainfall is crucial for Kharif crop sowing, particularly paddy cultivation, while also helping replenish reservoirs, improve groundwater levels, and ease heat and humidity in urban areas.
