Police claim accused named Nana Patwari during interrogation, while Congress calls the action politically motivated.
July 10, 2026: A political controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after Indore Police claimed that a portion of the brown sugar seized from two suspected drug traffickers was allegedly meant to be delivered to Nana Patwari, the brother of state Congress president Jitu Patwari. Deputy Commissioner of Police Narendra Rawat said Rajendra Nagar Police arrested Irfan Khan alias Golu Chanderi and Rani Bhai, recovering 10.8 grams of brown sugar from them. During questioning, the accused allegedly claimed the narcotics were to be supplied to Nana Patwari and another individual, Manav Gangwani. Police said they are verifying these claims and investigating the alleged drug supply network.
According to police, a background check found that nine criminal cases had previously been registered against Nana Patwari. However, officials clarified that they have not confirmed whether he has been arrested or formally named as an accused in the case. Investigators are continuing to examine the statements made during interrogation and gather further evidence before taking additional action.
Reacting strongly, Jitu Patwari accused the BJP government of targeting his family for political reasons, alleging that his brother was taken into custody without prior information. In a post on X, he claimed the move reflected political vendetta against opposition leaders. Senior Congress leader Vivek Tankha also questioned the police action and urged authorities to ensure a fair investigation. The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions in the state following the recent defection of former Congress leader Rakesh Singh Yadav to the BJP.
