PM Modi’s visit brings national attention to the centuries-old shrine known for its spiritual legacy and unique origin story.

April 14, 2026: The historic Maa Dat Kali Temple has come into national focus as Narendra Modi is set to visit the shrine during his Uttarakhand tour. This will be the first time an Indian Prime Minister offers prayers at the temple, creating excitement among locals. The temple premises have been specially decorated for the occasion, with the visit being seen as a significant moment that brings wider recognition to the over 200-year-old religious site.

Established on June 13, 1804, the temple traces its origins to the early 19th century during the construction of a key road linking Dehradun and Saharanpur. Nestled in the foothills of the Shivalik range and surrounded by dense forests, it has grown into a major spiritual destination. According to local folklore, the temple was built after Goddess Kali appeared in a dream to a British-era engineer facing repeated construction obstacles. Following this vision, the idol was handed over to Mahant Sukhbir Gusain, who built the shrine as per religious traditions.

Originally called “Dantkali,” referring to the fierce form of Goddess Kali, the temple’s name evolved during colonial times when British officials altered its pronunciation to “Dat Kali.” Today, the temple is revered as a symbol of protection and new beginnings, especially for travelers entering Dehradun. Devotees believe prayers offered here are fulfilled, and the continuously burning Akhand Jyoti signifies divine presence. With the Prime Minister’s visit, the temple is expected to see a rise in religious tourism, further strengthening its cultural importance.
