Allies negotiate cabinet share as fresh power arrangement takes shape

April 14, 2026: Nitish Kumar is set to step down as Chief Minister, triggering a major political shift in Bihar. His resignation is expected to pave the way for a new government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a significant change in leadership within the ruling alliance. Despite stepping aside, Nitish Kumar’s party, Janata Dal United (JDU), is likely to retain influence in the new arrangement.

As part of the emerging power-sharing formula, two Deputy Chief Minister posts are expected to go to JDU leaders. Key allies are also set to be accommodated, with Chirag Paswan’s party likely to secure two ministerial berths, while Jitan Ram Manjhi and Upendra Kushwaha are expected to get representation in the cabinet. The move reflects efforts to maintain balance among coalition partners.

Sources indicate the new cabinet could have around 32 to 33 ministers, with BJP expected to hold the largest share, followed closely by JDU. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for April 15 at Lok Bhavan, where the new leadership will formally take charge. The final composition will be closely watched to see how effectively it accommodates both major and smaller allies.
