Narendra Modi govt rules out fresh bill; oppn pushes quota on existing seats

April 18, 2026: Government sources have clarified that there is no plan to introduce a new Women’s Reservation Bill, amid mounting pressure from opposition parties. Leaders, including those from the Congress, have demanded immediate implementation of the 33% quota within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats, without waiting for delimitation or a fresh legislative process. However, the government has firmly rejected this proposal.

Officials argue that implementing seat-based reservation without a delimitation exercise is not feasible. They pointed out that similar proposals in the past, including during Congress-led governments, were not implemented due to structural and political challenges. According to the government, if such a model had been workable, it would have been adopted earlier.

The opposition continues to push for immediate implementation, claiming it would ensure faster political representation for women. Meanwhile, the Centre maintains that linking reservation to delimitation remains the only viable framework. The disagreement has led to a political deadlock, highlighting deeper differences over electoral reforms and the roadmap for women’s representation in Parliament.
