INDIA alliance seeks immediate quota within existing seats, writes to Narendra Modi
April 18, 2026: The INDIA alliance is set to escalate its campaign for women’s political representation by formally writing to Narendra Modi. The opposition will urge the government to implement the earlier Women’s Reservation Bill immediately, without linking it to any increase in parliamentary seats. Leaders across parties are also planning coordinated press conferences nationwide, framing their demand as a push for genuine empowerment while accusing the government of attempting to “redraw the political map of India.”
Opposition leaders argue that the 33% reservation for women should be implemented within the current strength of legislatures rather than through expansion. They believe that increasing the number of seats and linking the quota to delimitation could alter the political balance and weaken the core purpose of the policy. This demand is expected to be at the centre of their political outreach in the coming days.
The renewed push follows the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, which failed to secure the required two-thirds majority despite receiving 298 votes in favour and 230 against. The high-profile vote, attended by leaders such as Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Rahul Gandhi, marked a rare legislative setback for the government. With the House adjourned by Om Birla, the issue of women’s reservation is set to remain a major political flashpoint in the days ahead.
