July 22, 2026: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) on Wednesday demanded a CBI and SFIO investigation into the recognition process followed by the Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI), alleging serious concerns over the legal framework governing the recognition of planning institutions and courses. Addressing a press conference, NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar said questions had been raised about the legal authority under which ITPI grants recognition, creating uncertainty for students pursuing planning education.
Jakhar urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to examine ITPI’s recognition decisions, governance, approvals and financial dealings, wherever applicable. He also criticised the Union government, saying the Ministry of Education should clearly explain the legal framework governing planning education and accused it of remaining silent despite repeated controversies. Jakhar further demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, saying he should take moral responsibility for the issue.
The NSUI also called for protection of the academic and professional interests of students enrolled in B.Plan and M.Plan programmes, strict legal action if any violations are established, and the creation of a transparent statutory regulatory mechanism for planning education. Warning of a nationwide agitation, Jakhar said the organisation would intensify protests across universities and planning institutions if the government failed to order a CBI and SFIO inquiry and implement corrective measures.
