Re-elected Tibetan government-in-exile chief Penpa Tsering reaffirmed commitment to the Dalai Lama’s “Middle Way Policy”

May 27, 2026: Penpa Tsering on Wednesday reaffirmed his commitment to the “Middle Way Policy” proposed by Dalai Lama as he took oath after being re-elected as the head of the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamshala. Addressing a gathering in McLeod Ganj, the Sikyong of the Central Tibetan Administration said the policy seeks a peaceful resolution to the Tibet-China conflict through dialogue, non-violence and mutual benefit.

During his speech, Penpa Tsering accused the Chinese government of trying to erase Tibetan identity and spreading misinformation aimed at weakening unity among Tibetans. He said the administration would continue cautious backchannel communication with China while encouraging Tibetans in exile and inside Tibet to preserve their language, culture and religion.

The Tibetan leader also expressed gratitude to the governments and people of India, the United States and other countries for supporting the Tibetan cause. The Central Tibetan Administration is also organising a Tibetan cultural festival in Dharamshala from May 28 to 30. India remains home to the world’s largest Tibetan diaspora following the arrival of the Dalai Lama in 1959.
