A massive fire in a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow’s Aliganj area has left at least 15 people dead

June 22, 2026: At least 15 people have lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out in a three-storey commercial building on Usha Mehta Marg in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on Monday. Several others were injured, and authorities fear that more people may still be trapped inside. Following the tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath cancelled the remainder of his scheduled visits to Aligarh and Hathras and directed senior officials, including Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad and DGP Rajeev Krishna, to oversee rescue operations and submit a preliminary report.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said rescue teams were conducting a room-by-room search after some students who escaped informed authorities that others could still be trapped inside washrooms. Hospitals and ambulances were placed on high alert, while injured victims, including people who reportedly jumped from the building to escape the flames, were rushed for treatment. A total of 22 people were admitted to King George’s Medical University (KGMU), where 15 were declared dead and seven others were reported to be in stable condition.

Although the fire has now been brought under control, rescue operations are continuing. Emergency personnel created an opening through an adjacent building to move stretchers into the affected structure and assist search efforts. Officials believe four to five people may still be trapped inside. Local residents who joined the initial rescue effort described scenes of panic, with some victims jumping from the building to save themselves from the rapidly spreading fire.
