Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray in Kolkata
June 21, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three indigenously built frontline naval platforms—INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray—in Kolkata. The induction of the vessels marks a significant milestone for the Indian Navy and India’s defence manufacturing sector, with all three ships designed and built in the country using more than 75 per cent indigenous content. According to the Navy, the platforms will enhance maritime combat readiness, surveillance capabilities and coastal security.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the vessels reflect India’s growing self-reliance in defence production. The project involved over 200 MSMEs and generated substantial employment while strengthening collaboration between the Navy, public sector shipyards and private industry. The Ministry of Defence said the commissioning highlights the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defence sector.
INS Dunagiri, a stealth frigate under Project 17A, is equipped with BrahMos missiles and the MRSAM air defence system. INS Sanshodhak, a Survey Vessel (Large), is designed for hydrographic and oceanographic surveys using advanced technologies such as AUVs and ROVs. INS Agray, an Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, is fitted with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and sonar systems. Together, the three platforms are expected to strengthen India’s maritime domain awareness, anti-submarine warfare capabilities and overall naval preparedness.
