May 26, 2026: Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Tuesday announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Australia “in the very near future,” signalling stronger strategic and economic engagement between the two countries. Speaking after the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, Wong said Australia looked forward to hosting Modi and described India as a vital strategic partner for Canberra.

Wong highlighted the importance of the Indian diaspora in Australia, calling it a valued and significant part of Australian society. She said India and Australia share a common vision for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Emphasising India’s growing global influence, Wong described India as the world’s fastest-growing major economy and an essential partner as Australia works to diversify supply chains and strengthen economic resilience.

Referring to the Quad discussions, Wong said the grouping remains focused on the priorities of Indo-Pacific nations, including maritime security and regional stability. She clarified that the Quad’s maritime initiatives are not linked to Iran and are mainly aimed at combating illegal fishing and improving maritime awareness. Wong also confirmed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed Quad members on the ongoing US-Iran negotiations, with all countries hoping for peace and stability in the Strait of Hormuz region.
