New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to Indonesia is expected to strengthen India’s strategic partnership with Jakarta, with both countries likely to sign a series of significant agreements covering defence, economic cooperation and maritime security.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the proposed agreements will span several key sectors, including missile systems, critical minerals and maritime infrastructure, reflecting the growing strategic convergence between the two nations.

Indonesia Likely to Procure India’s Astra Missile

One of the most significant developments expected during the visit is Indonesia’s reported decision to procure India’s indigenously developed Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.

Sources said Jakarta’s interest in the missile system has grown following India’s demonstration of its indigenous defence capabilities during Operation Sindoor, where the country’s missile technology reportedly drew international attention.

If finalised, the deal would mark another milestone for India’s expanding defence exports and reinforce its position as a supplier of advanced indigenous military systems.

More BrahMos Missile Batteries Expected

In addition to the Astra missile, Indonesia is also expected to expand its inventory of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

Sources indicated that India is likely to support Jakarta by supplying additional BrahMos missile batteries as part of the broader defence cooperation package under discussion.

The move would further deepen military ties between the two countries and enhance Indonesia’s maritime defence capabilities in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region.

Strategic Partnership Set to Expand

Beyond defence cooperation, India and Indonesia are also expected to strengthen collaboration in sectors such as critical minerals and maritime infrastructure.

The proposed agreements are aimed at enhancing long-term strategic cooperation, boosting economic engagement and expanding collaboration on regional security and connectivity.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is being closely watched as both nations seek to elevate their comprehensive strategic partnership amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
