Opposition leaders seek high-level investigation and accountability after alleged rape-murder in Uttar Pradesh
April 25, 2026: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has demanded a high-level investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a girl from the Vishwakarma community in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur. In a social media post, Gandhi called for immediate justice, action against responsible police officials, and protection for the victim’s family, alleging that they faced threats while trying to file an FIR.
Gandhi linked the incident to previous cases such as Hathras, Kathua, and Unnao, claiming a pattern in crimes against women from marginalised communities. He questioned the accountability of the government, directing sharp remarks at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, asking why women continue to feel unsafe. He stated that justice should not require pleading and must be ensured without delay.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticised the handling of the case, alleging that victims are often further harassed instead of protected. The incident, reported from the Karanda area on April 15, has triggered protests and demands for justice from locals and the victim’s family, while police say the investigation is ongoing.
