Rajnath Singh calls for stronger research and innovation as warfare rapidly evolves with technology
May 4, 2026: Speaking at the North Tech Symposium 2026 in Prayagraj, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasised that future wars will be shaped in laboratories, making research and innovation critical for national security. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the “element of surprise” to stay ahead in modern conflicts.
Referring to Operation Sindoor, launched after the Pahalgam terror attack, Singh described it as a “unique” example of how India used advanced technology to strike terror infrastructure. He noted that indigenous systems like BrahMos and the Akash missile system played a key role in showcasing the armed forces’ precision and capability.
He also pointed to global examples like Operation Grim Beeper to underline how rapidly warfare is evolving, warning that “everything can be weaponised.” Stressing collaboration, Singh said the Defence Research and Development Organisation is now working closely with industry, academia, and startups, with increased funding, technology transfers, and open access to patents aimed at boosting India’s defence preparedness.
