A journalist working for a Bengali newspaper in Assam’s Silchar was allegedly assaulted by a group of men who also vandalised the media office

May 29, 2026: A 26-year-old journalist working for a Bengali newspaper in Silchar was allegedly assaulted by a group of men who also vandalised the office of the media organisation on Thursday evening. According to police, the attack took place in the Second Link Road area of the town around 7:30 pm. Following the incident, the victim filed an FIR at Rangirkhari Police Station, after which police registered a case and detained one suspect.

The injured journalist, identified as Raju Das of the Silchar-based newspaper and digital platform Barak Bani, alleged that the attackers first contacted him by phone before arriving at the office. He claimed one of the men assaulted him using brass knuckles, causing serious head injuries. Colleagues intervened and rescued him before he lost consciousness. The newspaper’s owner alleged that the journalist had recently received threats for reporting on gambling and illegal activities in the area.

Police officials said CCTV footage is being examined to identify the remaining accused, while investigations into the motive behind the attack are ongoing. The Silchar Press Club strongly condemned the assault and raised concerns over the growing safety risks faced by journalists in the region. Family members said the journalist is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Silchar after suffering deep injuries, while police are expected to record his statement once doctors permit it.
