The victim’s mother claimed she was roughed up by female police personnel during a protest march for justice, leading to her traditional bangle breaking and a head injury.

August 9, 2025: On Saturday, there was a riot in Kolkata when police and demonstrators battled as they marched to the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna. The parents of a young female doctor who was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a year ago led the march. It was a call for justice and responsibility.

The victim’s mother said that female police officers “roughed her up” on her way to the protest. In the fight, she said, her customary conch shell bangle broke, and she hurt her head. “Why are they stopping us like this?” She said, “All we want is to get to Nabanna and get justice for my daughter.” The victim’s father said that the cops got in the way of the family even though a court ruling said they may hold a peaceful assembly.

Protesters trying to break through barricades during the “Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan” were confronted with a police lathi charge. They wanted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to step down because she “failed to protect women.” Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, and other BJP officials said that the police hurt more than 100 demonstrators.

The demonstration is happening on the one-year anniversary of the doctor’s death, which shocked the whole country. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was found guilty and given a life sentence for the crime. However, the victim’s family and campaigners say the case is far from over because a police officer who was first jailed for lying during the investigation was later released on bail.
