Congress MP Shashi Tharoor acknowledged the frustration driving support for the Cockroach Janta Party
June 4, 2026: Congress MP and senior leader Shashi Tharoor has extended support to the concerns raised by young Indians backing the rapidly growing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical movement founded by Abhijeet Dipke. In an open letter addressed to Gen Z, Tharoor said the anger and disappointment felt by students and job seekers are justified, especially in the wake of controversies such as the alleged NEET paper leak and the CBSE on-screen marking dispute. He noted that years of hard work and preparation are undermined when examination systems fail, calling such incidents a betrayal of students’ trust and future aspirations.
While acknowledging the emotional appeal of the movement, Tharoor cautioned against treating it as a complete solution to deeper systemic problems. Referring to the massive online support gathered by the Cockroach Janta Party, he remarked that social media may serve as a public square but cannot replace democratic institutions. He argued that frustration alone cannot create lasting change and stressed that successful movements require organisation, strategy, legal engagement and sustained political participation. According to him, outrage may ignite a movement, but meaningful reforms demand structured efforts that go beyond slogans, memes and viral campaigns.
Tharoor urged young citizens to actively engage with elected representatives, use tools such as the Right to Information Act, participate in civic processes and work with student groups, legal organisations and policy advocates. He encouraged them to convert grievances into actionable demands and hold governments accountable through democratic means. The Congress leader also highlighted the importance of challenging the system from within rather than abandoning it, saying that informed participation remains the most effective way to push for reforms and ensure that public institutions become more responsive to the aspirations of the younger generation.
