Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation suspends smart meter replacement after public backlash and billing complaints
April 19, 2026: In a major relief for consumers, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has temporarily halted the replacement of old electricity meters with smart prepaid meters across the state. The decision, announced by Chairman Ashish Goyal, will remain in effect until a high-level technical committee submits its report. All discoms have been instructed to stop meter replacements immediately, although new electricity connections will continue to use smart prepaid meters.
The move comes after widespread protests and complaints from consumers, who alleged that meters were being replaced without consent and that electricity bills had increased significantly after installation. The prepaid system—where supply is cut once the balance is exhausted—has further intensified public dissatisfaction. Taking note of the situation, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a review meeting and ordered the formation of a committee on April 12 to examine issues related to meter accuracy, billing, and consumer grievances.
Despite a large-scale rollout—around 78 lakh smart meters already installed, including over 70 lakh prepaid units—the project has now been paused. The state had planned to replace nearly 3.5 crore meters as part of its transition to a prepaid system. Officials said that protecting consumer interests remains the priority, and the future of the project will depend on the findings of the committee.
