All India Trinamool Congress approaches Election Commission of India alleging misuse of agencies ahead of key vote

April 19, 2026: Days ahead of polling in the Rashbehari constituency, the All India Trinamool Congress has approached the Election Commission of India alleging misuse of central agencies. The complaint follows Income Tax raids at the residence and offices of party candidate Debashis Kumar. In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the party claimed the action violated the Model Code of Conduct and was intended to influence the ongoing election process.

The raids, conducted by the Income Tax Department, reportedly covered multiple locations including Kumar’s home, ward office, election office, and his in-laws’ residence. TMC described the move as “coercive action,” alleging it disrupted campaigning and created fear among voters and party workers. The party has urged the poll panel to restrain further action while the Model Code of Conduct remains in force.

The issue has triggered a sharp political clash between TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Centre of intimidation, while BJP leaders defended the raids as action against corruption. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar rejected the allegations, stating agencies were acting independently. With voting scheduled for April 29, the controversy has further intensified the high-stakes electoral battle in West Bengal.
