Chennai: The latest exit poll by Today’s Chanakya suggests that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance is on course for a comfortable victory in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, the standout development is the strong debut of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which appears to have significantly altered the state’s traditional political dynamics.

Seat Projections: DMK+ Crosses Majority Mark

According to the survey, the DMK-led alliance (DMK+) is projected to win around 125 seats, with a margin of error of ±11 seats in the 234-member Assembly. This comfortably places the alliance above the 118-seat majority mark required to form the government.

The projections indicate that DMK+ is likely to retain power with a decisive mandate, continuing its dominance in Tamil Nadu politics.

TVK Makes Impactful Entry in First Election

The emergence of TVK is being seen as the biggest surprise of this election. The party is projected to win approximately 63 seats (±11) in its debut outing.

While these numbers may not be enough to form a government, they firmly establish TVK as a serious political force. The party’s strong performance suggests it has quickly captured voter attention and disrupted what has long been a two-party contest.

AIADMK+ Trails in a Changing Political Contest

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led alliance is projected to secure around 45 seats (±11), indicating a relatively weaker position in the evolving three-cornered contest.

The data suggests that AIADMK+ may struggle to compete effectively as voter preferences shift and new political alternatives gain traction.

Triangular Contest Redefines Tamil Nadu Politics

The exit poll highlights a significant transformation in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK, the state now appears to be witnessing a triangular contest, with TVK emerging as a major disruptor.

Despite this shift, the DMK alliance is expected to maintain a clear edge, benefiting from established support and organisational strength.

High Voter Turnout Reflects Strong Public Participation

Voting for all 234 constituencies took place on April 23, recording an impressive turnout of over 85%, signalling strong voter engagement across the state.

The final results will be declared on May 4, when counting of votes begins. While exit polls provide an early indication, actual outcomes may vary.
