The temporary nationwide ban on instant messaging platform Telegram is expected to be lifted soon, with government sources indicating that services will be restored following the completion of the NEET UG 2026 re-examination process.

According to people familiar with the development, the government is not considering an extension of the restriction that remained in place until June 22. Telegram is expected to become fully accessible again, including its availability on app stores, once the restoration process is completed.

However, while the platform itself is set to return, one important restriction will remain. The government has reportedly directed that Telegram’s message-editing feature stay disabled until June 30 as part of ongoing efforts to prevent misuse of the platform.

Telegram Services Yet To Be Fully Restored

The clarification comes amid complaints from users who reported that Telegram services had not been fully restored even after the temporary ban period ended.

Several users noted difficulties accessing certain features and questioned whether the restrictions had been extended. Sources have now indicated that the restoration process is underway and that services should resume shortly.

Why Was Telegram Blocked?

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had ordered a temporary nationwide block on Telegram last week as a precautionary measure ahead of the Re-NEET UG 2026 examination.

The decision was taken after authorities identified concerns regarding the alleged use of the platform by organised cheating syndicates and exam fraud networks.

The restriction was intended to curb the circulation of leaked examination material, answer keys, and other content that could compromise the integrity of the national medical entrance examination.

NTA Cited Public Order Concerns

In a statement issued on June 16, the National Testing Agency (NTA) explained the rationale behind the move.

“Both measures have been taken in the interest of public order, in response to the organised use of the platform by cheating rackets to defraud candidates appearing for the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled on June 21, 2026,” the agency said.

Apart from restricting access to Telegram, authorities also imposed limits on certain platform features believed to be vulnerable to misuse by groups involved in examination fraud.

Editing Feature To Remain Restricted Till June 30

Although Telegram’s core services are expected to resume, the editing function will continue to remain disabled until June 30.

Officials believe that restricting message editing could help prevent the manipulation of previously shared content and reduce the possibility of exam-related misinformation being circulated through altered messages.

The government has not yet announced whether additional safeguards will remain in place after June 30.

Re-NEET Exam Conducted Amid Tight Security

The temporary Telegram ban formed part of a broader set of security measures implemented ahead of the Re-NEET UG 2026 examination, which was conducted on June 21.

Authorities increased surveillance of digital platforms and social media channels following concerns over organised attempts to influence or compromise the examination process.

With the re-exam now completed, attention has shifted towards restoring normal access to online services while maintaining safeguards against future misuse.
