Trinamool Congress leader and former Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation chairman Sabyasachi Dutta
June 9, 2026: Trinamool Congress leader Sabyasachi Dutta was arrested on Tuesday morning from West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district in connection with an alleged extortion case. According to police, the action was taken after a businessman filed a complaint accusing Dutta of involvement in extortion and criminal intimidation.
A senior police officer said an FIR was registered based on the complaint, following which Dutta was taken into custody from his residence in Raigachi. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the allegations and are expected to gather further evidence related to the case.
Dutta is a prominent political figure in West Bengal and previously served as chairman of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. He joined the BJP in 2019 before returning to the Trinamool Congress a few years later. He also contested the 2026 Assembly election from the Barasat constituency but was unsuccessful.
