The Udupi District Consumer Commission sentenced Congress leader Amrith Shenoy to three years in jail after finding him guilty
June 26, 2026: Congress leader Amrith Shenoy has been sentenced to three years of simple imprisonment by the Udupi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for wilfully violating its order in a consumer dispute related to a flat transaction. The commission held him guilty under Section 72 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, after he failed to execute and register Flat No. 304 in Voyager Apartment in favour of complainant Santosh Pai. Alternatively, Shenoy had been directed to pay ₹27.20 lakh along with 9% annual interest.
After Shenoy allegedly ignored the commission’s directions, the complainant moved an execution petition seeking enforcement of the order. Following the hearing, the commission concluded that Shenoy had deliberately disobeyed its earlier ruling, making him liable for punishment under the Consumer Protection Act. On June 24, the commission sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment and imposed a ₹1 lakh fine, with an additional six months’ jail in case of non-payment.
An arrest warrant was subsequently issued, and Shenoy was taken into custody before being produced before the commission on June 25. He was later remanded to judicial custody and sent to Hiriyadka Jail, where he remains lodged as legal proceedings continue.
