UP Energy Minister A.K. Sharma has sought clarification from UPPCL over a power surcharge and other decisions
June 11, 2026: A fresh controversy has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s power sector after Energy Minister A.K. Sharma reportedly questioned several decisions taken by the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL). In a letter to UPPCL Chairman Ashish Goel, Sharma raised objections to the 10 percent Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA) surcharge imposed on June electricity bills and sought details about how the decision was approved. He also expressed concern that important policy matters were being learned through media reports rather than official communication channels.
The minister reportedly highlighted the impact of the additional surcharge on consumers and stressed the need for greater transparency in decision-making. He also raised concerns about the removal of a large number of contractual employees, including linemen and support staff, warning that the move could affect maintenance work and the resolution of electricity-related complaints across the state.
Sharma emphasized that decisions with direct public consequences should be taken only after proper consultation between the Energy Department and UPPCL. He cautioned that such developments could create confusion among consumers and affect the image of the government. The issue has sparked administrative and political discussions, with attention now focused on UPPCL’s response and the possibility of reviewing the surcharge and other contested decisions.
