Exit polls suggest Vijay’s party gains significant vote share, influencing electoral dynamics

April 29, 2026: Actor-turned-politician Vijay has made a notable electoral debut in Tamil Nadu, with exit polls indicating that his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, could play a crucial role in shaping the state’s political landscape. According to projections, TVK is expected to secure around 10 to 12 seats in the 234-member Assembly. More significantly, its estimated vote share of 17.5 per cent points to a strong and immediate connect with voters in its first major election outing.

The rise of TVK appears to have had a greater impact on the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance than on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam bloc. Exit polls project the DMK-led alliance winning between 122 and 132 seats, while the AIADMK alliance is estimated at 87 to 100 seats. Analysts suggest that TVK may have split anti-incumbency votes, limiting the opposition’s ability to translate support into seats.

Despite this shift, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is still expected to retain power with a comfortable majority. For TVK, however, the bigger takeaway lies in its long-term prospects. A strong vote share in its debut election positions the party as a serious emerging force, potentially reshaping Tamil Nadu’s traditionally bipolar political contest in the years ahead.
