After Mamata Banerjee’s defeat, here’s a look at the pension and benefits she is entitled to under Indian law.
May 5, 2026: In a major political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party is set to form the government in West Bengal with a sweeping majority, reducing the All India Trinamool Congress to 80 seats. Amid the electoral setback, attention has turned to the pension and benefits available to Mamata Banerjee.
Despite being eligible for multiple pensions, Banerjee has repeatedly said she chooses not to accept any salary or pension—a personal decision rather than a legal constraint. Having served seven terms as a Member of Parliament, she qualifies for a significant MP pension. Under current norms, a base pension of ₹31,000 is granted after five years in office, with an additional ₹2,500 for each extra year. Given her long tenure, her MP pension alone could range between ₹80,000 and ₹1 lakh per month.
In addition, Banerjee is entitled to benefits as a former MLA and Chief Minister, including lifelong perks such as medical facilities, security, and staff support. However, as per rules, individuals who have served as both MP and MLA typically opt for one pension—usually the higher one. If she chose to accept it, her MP pension would likely be the most substantial, along with the privileges accorded to a former Chief Minister.
