Mumbai: Spencer Johnson is set to take centre stage for Chennai Super Kings in their crucial bottom-of-the-table clash against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Bowling coach Eric Simmons hinted at Johnson’s inclusion after pacer Khaleel Ahmed picked up an injury in Chennai’s previous match. Khaleel was forced to leave the field before completing his overs during CSK’s game against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Johnson, who was signed for ₹1.5 crore as a replacement in Chennai’s bowling unit, is now expected to step into the playing XI at a time when injuries have significantly disrupted the team’s campaign.

Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj have been really good for us. Spencer Johnson (Khaleel’s replacement) will be in our starting XI tomorrow night,” Simmons said on the eve of the match.

The development comes as Chennai continues to manage a growing injury list that has hampered team balance throughout the season.

CSK’s Season So Far: Early Struggles, Brief Revival

CSK’s 2026 campaign began on a difficult note, with three consecutive losses to:

  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Punjab Kings
  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru

However, the team briefly revived its season with back-to-back victories over:

  • Delhi Capitals
  • Kolkata Knight Riders

That momentum was halted again after a narrow 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With only two wins from six matches, Chennai currently sits eighth in the points table, making the clash against Mumbai a must-win fixture.

Mumbai Indians Also Battling Inconsistency

Mumbai’s journey this season has also been far from smooth.

After opening their campaign with a win against Kolkata, Mumbai suffered losses against:

  • Delhi Capitals
  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru
  • Punjab Kings

They regained some confidence with a strong victory against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.

One bright moment came when star pacer Jasprit Bumrah claimed his first wicket of the season during Mumbai’s sixth match.

Rohit Sharma Injury Adds To MI Concerns

Mumbai suffered another setback when opener Rohit Sharma sustained a hamstring injury in his right leg.

Rohit had retired hurt during the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Captain Hardik Pandya later confirmed that Rohit is expected to miss the next two matches, further complicating Mumbai’s plans.

MS Dhoni Returns To Training Ahead Of Crucial Clash

Meanwhile, former Chennai captain MS Dhoni, now 44, has resumed light training.

He recently completed his first wicketkeeping session of IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium after missing the team’s opening six matches. His gradual return to match readiness could boost morale within the Chennai camp.

High-Stakes Clash At Bottom Of Table

With both teams struggling for consistency and battling injuries, the CSK vs MI rivalry carries added significance this time.

Chennai will be hoping Johnson’s inclusion strengthens their bowling attack, while Mumbai will look to build momentum despite key absences.

The April 23 encounter is shaping up to be a season-defining match for both franchises as they attempt to climb out of the lower half of the standings.
