January 20, 2025: Top seed Jannik Sinner reached the Australian Open quarterfinals for the third time after a determined 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Holger Rune in a hard-fought fourth-round encounter. Despite struggling with physical issues, including a health scare during the match, Sinner battled through the intense 32-degree Melbourne heat to emerge victorious.
Sinner, who had skipped practice ahead of the match and consulted the tournament doctor, called for a medical timeout during the third set after experiencing significant discomfort. The Italian was visibly drained and had his right hand twitching uncontrollably during a break, but after receiving treatment, he gradually regained his rhythm. His opponent, Rune, contributed to his own downfall with 16 unforced errors, and Sinner capitalized on this, securing the third set and an early break in the fourth to seal the win.

Following the match, Sinner explained his struggles: “I think we saw that today I was struggling physically. Came here as late as possible… playing against a tough opponent, but also playing against myself a little bit.” He reassured fans that there were no injuries and that the issue was purely health-related. “Injury-wise, I have nothing. Just health-wise a little bit struggling, but I am good with injuries.”
Sinner dominated the match statistically, winning 83% of first-serve points and hitting 35 winners. His record against Rune improved to 3-2 after the win.
Meanwhile, Ben Shelton also advanced to the quarterfinals after his opponent Gael Monfils retired during their match due to an injury. Shelton was leading 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 1-0 after a physical battle lasting nearly three hours when Monfils, struggling with the toll of the match on his body, decided to call it quits.

After the match, Shelton reflected on his performance and Monfils’ incredible career. “Gael is someone I have watched since a little kid… At 38 years old, I hope I am still walking without crutches,” Shelton said, praising Monfils for his athleticism and entertainment value. “To push me the way he did today and entertain everyone… is so impressive.” Shelton expressed admiration for Monfils’ longevity and spoke about his aspirations to create similar memories as he grows older.
The Australian Open quarterfinals continue to shape up with Sinner and Shelton emerging as key contenders in the men’s draw.
