January 20, 2025: Newly appointed captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rishabh Pant, recently shared his approach to leadership ahead of the upcoming IPL season. During an interview on Star Sports’ show LSG Special Live, Pant discussed his proactive style of captaincy and the importance of creating an environment where players feel supported and free to express themselves on the field.
Pant, who was bought by LSG for a record-breaking Rs 27 crores in the IPL mega auction, noted that one of his main goals as a captain is to be proactive and ensure consistent communication with both the management and his teammates. He emphasized the importance of keeping everyone on the same page, especially in a high-pressure format like the IPL, where there are several senior international players. He mentioned, “One aspect of my captaincy is that I am and I want to be very proactive. This is something I have learnt in the last two years. The more communication you can have with the management and players, the bond becomes better.”

Recognizing the challenge of leading a team with international stars, Pant further added, “How do you communicate with them so that everyone works in the same direction? Wanting to have your team win.” His focus on creating a unified team spirit will be key as LSG embarks on the new season.
Pant also highlighted his desire to foster a sense of freedom among his players. He explained, “I want to be someone who gives freedom to players to express themselves and to have them feel the backing that if we ask you to do something, we are there for you.” He also mentioned that while it’s important to back players, it’s equally crucial for them to understand that opportunities in the playing XI will be earned, and players need to perform to retain their spots.
On his record-breaking auction price, Pant expressed his excitement at joining LSG and the responsibility that comes with being the most expensive player in IPL history. His leadership will be critical as LSG looks to build a strong team culture and compete at the highest level.
Having represented Delhi Capitals (DC) for his entire IPL career so far, Pant has a wealth of experience as a leader. In 2021, he led DC to the playoffs, showcasing his potential as a captain. Pant has played 110 IPL matches, scoring 3,284 runs at an average of 35.31, including a century and 18 fifties, further solidifying his credentials as a top player in the format.
As the new captain of LSG, Pant will bring his experience, proactive leadership, and passion for the game, aiming to lead the team to success in the upcoming IPL season.
