Joe Root has been appointed England’s interim captain for the second Test against the New Zealand National Cricket Team, which begins on June 17 at The Oval.
The decision comes after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) launched an investigation involving regular captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson following an alleged breach of team discipline after England’s victory in the first Test at Lord’s.
ECB Investigation Ongoing
In an official statement, the ECB confirmed that both Stokes and Atkinson have not been considered for selection for the second Test while the investigation remains active.
Reports suggest the pair allegedly breached England’s midnight curfew by staying at a London nightclub until the early hours of June 8.
The curfew policy was introduced earlier this year after several alcohol-related incidents involving England players during overseas tours of New Zealand and Australia. Consequently, the ECB has taken a stricter approach toward player discipline.
The reported incident also involved Totua Auvaa of Saracens. According to reports, an altercation occurred in which an ECB security officer accompanying the players was injured.
However, the ECB has not released further details while investigations continue.
Joe Root Returns to Leadership Role
Root’s appointment marks his return to Test captaincy more than four years after stepping down from the role in April 2022.
He remains England’s most experienced Test captain, having led the national side in 64 Test matches. During that period, England recorded 27 victories, suffered 26 defeats and drew 11 matches.
His vast leadership experience made him the preferred choice to guide the team in Stokes’ absence.
Although white-ball captain Harry Brook was also considered a potential candidate, selectors opted for Root’s proven record and experience in the longest format.
Jofra Archer Returns to England Squad
England have made two changes to their squad for the second Test.
Stokes and Atkinson have been replaced by wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox and fast bowler Jofra Archer.
Archer returns after missing the first Test. The pace bowler had been rested following his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
His comeback provides England with additional pace and experience ahead of a crucial match in the series.
England Hold Series Advantage
England enter the second Test with momentum firmly on their side after securing a 115-run victory over New Zealand in the opening match at Lord’s.
The hosts currently lead the three-match series 1-0 and will be aiming to seal the series with another win at The Oval.
New Zealand, meanwhile, must respond strongly to keep the contest alive and force a decider.
England Squad for Second Test
England’s squad for the second Test includes:
- Joe Root (Captain)
- Rehan Ahmed
- Jofra Archer
- Sonny Baker
- Shoaib Bashir
- Jacob Bethell
- Harry Brook
- Jordan Cox
- Ben Duckett
- Matthew Fisher
- Emilio Gay
- James Rew
- Ollie Robinson
- Jamie Smith
- Josh Tongue
Crucial Match Ahead for England
The second Test carries extra significance for England as they attempt to secure the series while managing the distraction surrounding the ongoing investigation.
Root’s leadership experience and Archer’s return provide a boost for the home side. Nevertheless, New Zealand will view the absence of Stokes as an opportunity to level the series.
All eyes will now be on The Oval as England seek another victory under the temporary leadership of one of their most accomplished cricketers.
