As Argentina prepare to face Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, an old photograph of Lionel Messi holding and bathing a five-month-old Lamine Yamal has gone viral once again. What was once an ordinary charity photoshoot has now become one of football’s most iconic images.

The remarkable coincidence has fascinated football fans around the world as the legendary Argentine prepares to face Spain’s brightest young star on the biggest stage in the sport.

The Story Behind the Viral Photo

The photograph was taken in December 2007 during a charity calendar project organised by Diario SPORT, the FC Barcelona Foundation, and UNICEF.

Families across Catalonia entered a raffle to participate in the campaign. Lamine Yamal’s family, who lived in Rocafonda, Mataró, won the draw.

By pure chance, the Barcelona first-team player assigned to the photoshoot was 20-year-old Lionel Messi, who was still establishing himself in the senior squad.

Neither Messi nor Yamal’s family could have imagined the historic significance the image would one day carry.

Photographer Recalls the Memorable Shoot

The photograph was captured by freelance photographer Joan Monfort, who recently reflected on the experience.

According to Monfort, the session was far from easy because Messi was naturally shy and uncomfortable around the newborn.

He recalled that Messi initially did not know how to hold the baby.

Monfort explained that the footballer had just come out of the dressing room and suddenly found himself standing beside a small tub filled with water and a five-month-old infant.

Eventually, with help from Yamal’s mother, Sheila Ebana, everyone relaxed, allowing Monfort to capture the now-famous image.

Looking back, the photographer described it as the most famous photograph of his career and compared the coincidence to “winning the lottery.”

Messi’s Journey Since That Day

Since the photograph was taken, Messi has built one of the greatest careers in football history.

His achievements include:

  • Eight Ballon d’Or awards
  • Four UEFA Champions League titles
  • Ten La Liga championships
  • FIFA World Cup 2022 winner with Argentina
  • Numerous domestic and international records

Over the years, Messi established himself as Barcelona’s greatest player and one of the finest footballers the sport has ever seen.

Lamine Yamal’s Rise Has Been Extraordinary

While Messi’s legacy is already complete, Lamine Yamal is only beginning his journey.

The Barcelona academy graduate quickly became one of the club’s youngest-ever first-team players before emerging as one of Europe’s biggest talents.

He also played a key role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and has continued his impressive rise during the FIFA World Cup 2026, becoming one of the tournament’s standout performers.

At just a young age, Yamal is already viewed as one of football’s future superstars.

A Different Kind of Passing the Torch

Football fans have often compared this image with another famous Barcelona photograph.

When Messi scored his first senior goal for Barcelona in 2005, Ronaldinho lifted the teenager onto his shoulders in celebration. That picture later came to symbolize the passing of the torch between two generations.

The photograph of Messi and baby Yamal tells a different story.

There was no symbolic gesture, no mentor guiding his successor, and no planned moment of history. It was simply a random charity event.

However, nearly two decades later, football has given that image a completely new meaning.

World Cup Final Adds New Meaning to the Photo

Now, fate has brought both players together once again.

Messi enters the FIFA World Cup 2026 final aiming to win a second World Cup title with Argentina and further cement his legendary career.

On the opposite side stands Lamine Yamal, who hopes to lead Spain to its second FIFA World Cup title and its first since 2010.

Years before either player could have imagined this moment, they unknowingly shared the same frame.

Now, they will share the biggest stage in world football.
