The Trinamool Congress MP appeared before the Bidhannagar court after the Calcutta High Court directed him to cooperate with the investigation.
July 15, 2026: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the Bidhannagar court on Wednesday to provide his voice sample in connection with an investigation into his alleged intimidatory speech during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign. His appearance came after the Calcutta High Court directed him to appear before the magistrate on July 15, following his absence on two earlier dates.
Heavy police deployment was made in and around the court premises in Salt Lake to maintain law and order during Banerjee’s appearance. Acting on a plea by his lawyer, the High Court had also directed the police to ensure that the Diamond Harbour MP was protected from any form of harassment, including attempts to disrupt his visit to the court.
Earlier, the High Court had expressed dissatisfaction over Banerjee’s alleged lack of cooperation with the investigation. The court also dismissed as withdrawn his petition challenging the order directing him to provide a voice sample. Banerjee has separately sought the quashing of the FIR registered against him over alleged intimidatory remarks made during a public meeting ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
