A post-dinner rest on the rooftop of their four-storey home turned tragic for a couple in East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar, leaving the husband dead and his wife critically injured after both fell from the terrace late on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Varun Sharma, while his wife Geeta (29) is undergoing treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, police said.
Couple Fell After Family Heard Heated Argument
According to Delhi Police, the couple lived with their family in Nanak Basti, Old Seelampur, under the jurisdiction of the Gandhi Nagar Police Station.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the family had dinner together at around 9 pm, after which Varun and Geeta went to sleep on the rooftop of their house.
About an hour later, family members reportedly heard the couple arguing on the terrace. Moments afterwards, they heard a loud noise.
“Around 10 pm, family members heard the couple arguing on the terrace, followed by a loud sound of someone falling,” police said.
When relatives rushed outside, they found both Varun and Geeta lying seriously injured in the lane below.
Husband Declared Dead, Wife Battles for Life
The injured couple was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.
Doctors at Dr Hedgewar Hospital declared Varun Sharma brought dead. Geeta, whose injuries were found to be severe, was later referred to GTB Hospital, where she continues to receive treatment.
Police said the incident came to light after receiving a medico-legal case (MLC) report from Dr Hedgewar Hospital, where Varun had been brought by his brother, Arun Sharma.
Police Yet to Determine Cause of Fall
Investigators are still trying to establish exactly what happened on the rooftop.
Police said it remains unclear whether the couple accidentally fell during the argument or whether one person pushed the other.
“So far, family members have not expressed suspicion of any crime, though investigators are examining all possible angles,” a senior police officer said.
Authorities are questioning family members and examining the circumstances leading up to the incident as part of the ongoing investigation.
Married Since 2019, Couple Have Young Son
According to police, Varun and Geeta were married in February 2019 and have a two-and-a-half-year-old son.
Varun’s body has been sent to GTB Hospital for a post-mortem examination, the findings of which are expected to play a key role in determining the exact cause of death.
Police said further investigation is underway, and no conclusion has yet been reached regarding the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
