The much-awaited Ganga Expressway, Uttar Pradesh’s newest greenfield expressway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj, is set to be inaugurated this month. Once operational, the expressway will significantly cut travel time between the two cities to around five hours.
Spanning 594 kilometres, the six-lane corridor has been developed with modern infrastructure and strategic features, including the capability to function as a runway for fighter jets and transport aircraft during emergencies.
A significant portion of the project has been constructed by the Adani Group, which built three of the four sections, accounting for 464 kilometres of the expressway.
A Six-Lane Expressway Passing Through 12 Key Districts
The expressway runs through 12 districts across Uttar Pradesh, improving connectivity across multiple regions. These districts include:
- Meerut
- Hapur
- Bulandshahr
- Amroha
- Sambhal
- Badaun
- Shahjahanpur
- Hardoi
- Unnao
- Rae Bareli
- Pratapgarh
- Prayagraj
There are also plans to extend the corridor further to Haridwar, strengthening inter-state connectivity. Additionally, the road infrastructure has been designed with future expansion in mind and can be widened from six lanes to eight lanes.
Advanced Safety And Surveillance Systems Installed
Authorities have equipped the expressway with multiple safety measures aimed at enhancing road security and monitoring traffic flow.
Key safety features include:
- Cemented fencing along the entire stretch
- Speed monitoring cameras installed every 10 kilometres
- High-resolution CCTV cameras placed every 1 kilometre
- Trees planted along the divider to reduce headlight glare from oncoming vehicles
Streetlights have been installed throughout the expressway to ensure adequate illumination at night, while red blinkers on both sides of the road provide additional visibility.
To enhance pedestrian safety, dedicated sidelaned underpasses have been constructed, allowing safe crossing without interrupting traffic.
Modern Amenities And India’s First Expressway Trauma Centres
Nine major facility centres have been developed along the expressway, offering travellers a wide range of amenities.
These include:
- Petrol and diesel pumps
- CNG filling stations
- Electric vehicle charging stations
- Food courts and cafeterias
- Motels and rest areas
- Parking spaces
- Toilets
- Trauma centres
Notably, the Ganga Expressway is India’s first expressway equipped with trauma centres. Authorities have partnered with leading private hospitals to provide emergency medical support along the route.
Electric charging stations will allow simultaneous charging of four cars and two trucks, while cranes, ambulances and tow vehicles will be deployed every 50 kilometres to handle emergencies.
Budget-friendly roadside eateries (dhabas) are also planned to provide affordable food options for travellers.
Expressway Features Strategic Fighter Jet Runway
One of the most significant features of the expressway is its 3.5-kilometre-long runway located in Shahjahanpur district.
This runway enables emergency landings of fighter aircraft and transport planes, making it the third expressway in Uttar Pradesh with such capability. Similar facilities already exist on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway and the Purvanchal Expressway.
Toll Rates And Construction Timeline
Travellers using the full stretch of the expressway will be required to pay approximately ₹1,300 as toll charges for the entire 594-kilometre journey.
Construction of the expressway began in November 2022 and was completed this month. The project progressed at an average speed of one kilometre every two days, allowing it to be finished in approximately 1,000 days.
Industrial Corridors And Logistics Hubs Planned
The expressway is expected to boost economic development by supporting the creation of several industrial corridors, including logistics hubs, warehouses and manufacturing clusters.
Work has already begun to allocate units for an Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics Cluster in Badaun, which is likely to attract investment and generate employment opportunities in the region.
A Boost To Religious Tourism Across Northern India
Beyond industrial growth, the Ganga Expressway is also expected to enhance religious tourism by improving access to major pilgrimage destinations.
The corridor will make travel easier for devotees heading to locations such as:
- Haridwar
- Varanasi
- Garh Mukteshwar
- Prayagraj
Improved connectivity to these religious centres is expected to increase tourism and regional economic activity.
