Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma has finally set the record straight regarding his controversial “unprofessional” comment about Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) teenage sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The remark, which originally surfaced during a light-hearted chat on AB de Villiers’ YouTube channel earlier this year, had gone viral after being interpreted by many as a critique of the 15-year-old’s work ethic.
“Let a Child Be a Child”: The Context of the Comment
Clarifying his stance on a recent RCB podcast, Jitesh explained that his words were born out of affection rather than malice. He revealed that while Sooryavanshi is a “professional” the moment he steps onto the cricket field, his “unprofessional” side off the field is simply a reflection of his age. Jitesh shared anecdotes of the youngster visiting his home, speaking with his wife, and indulging in late-night ice cream—a habit Jitesh jokingly tries to curb.
“He is a 15-year-old kid who loves ice cream. He comes to my room and eats it with me,” Jitesh shared. “I tell him, ‘You’re only fifteen. Watch TV, eat whatever you want, and just focus on your batting.’ When he is with me, he can be himself because I don’t judge him.”
Praising the Future of Indian Cricket
The controversy had gained traction after Sooryavanshi dismantled the RCB bowling attack earlier this season, smashing a breathtaking 78 runs off just 26 balls in Guwahati. Jitesh reminded critics that in the very same interview with AB de Villiers, he had named Vaibhav as the next big star of Indian cricket, citing his exceptional technique and mental toughness. Jitesh emphasized that the two share a bond similar to brothers, and his comments were meant to highlight the importance of letting a young talent enjoy his youth despite the immense pressure of the IPL.
Current Form and Upcoming Clashes
While Jitesh has faced his own share of scrutiny this season for his form in the finisher role—averaging just 9 across seven innings—he remains a vital part of the RCB squad as they “chase” the 2026 title. As for Sooryavanshi, the RR opener continues his historic run, having already amassed 404 runs in 10 innings with a staggering strike rate of 237.65. The clarification has been well-received by the cricketing community, shifting the focus back to the incredible on-field performances of both players.
