Iran says IRGC Navy acted over alleged violations as commercial vessels, including one bound for Gujarat, are detained in Strait of Hormuz

April 22, 2026: Iran has defended its decision to seize an India-bound cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the action was taken over alleged maritime violations. According to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV, the ship was intercepted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy along with another commercial vessel.

Iranian authorities said the vessels were detained after they failed to comply with maritime regulations and ignored instructions issued by naval forces. The IRGC stated that the action was necessary to maintain safety and order in the strategically important waterway, adding that any activity seen as a threat to maritime stability would be dealt with firmly. The ships have reportedly been moved into Iranian waters for further inspection.

One of the vessels, identified as heading towards Gujarat, has raised concerns over India-linked trade routes. The incident comes amid already heightened tensions in the region and adds to uncertainty for global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for energy and cargo movement. Analysts say the seizure highlights growing risks for commercial shipping amid stalled diplomatic engagement and rising regional friction.
