Government allows blending of ethanol and synthetic hydrocarbons with aviation turbine fuel, easing aviation fuel regulations
April 22, 2026: India has permitted the blending of ethanol and other synthetic or man-made hydrocarbons with aviation turbine fuel (ATF), marking a significant policy update in the aviation fuel sector. However, the government has not introduced any immediate mandatory blending targets.
The decision comes through amendments to the Aviation Turbine Fuel (Regulation of Marketing) Order, 2001, issued under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The revised rules expand the definition of ATF to include permissible blends with synthetic hydrocarbons.
Officials said the move is aimed at modernising fuel regulations and supporting future-ready aviation fuel standards, though implementation timelines and blending requirements will be decided separately.
