The turmoil follows the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, with police firings, mob beatings, and incidents of arson contributing to the high death toll, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
In a particularly alarming incident, a mob armed with sticks stormed the district jail in Sherpur District in northern Bangladesh, freeing more than 500 inmates. The chaos in Sherpur is part of a broader wave of violence that has swept through the country.
Despite Prime Minister Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country, crowds of protesters continue to roam the streets in Dhaka and other major cities. In response to the escalating violence, the Bangladesh Army has temporarily taken control and urged the public to stop the unrest.
