United States Department of State widens visa curbs on individuals linked to adversarial powers across the Western Hemisphere

April 18, 2026: The United States has expanded its visa restriction policy to deny entry to individuals it believes are acting on behalf of adversarial powers in the Western Hemisphere. Announced by the United States Department of State on April 16, 2026, the move is aimed at safeguarding national security and maintaining regional stability. The updated framework also extends these restrictions to the immediate family members of those identified.

Under the new policy, foreign nationals who are found to “knowingly direct, authorise, fund, or provide significant support” to activities deemed harmful to US interests may be denied visas. Officials said this includes facilitating access to strategic assets, undermining regional security efforts, or carrying out influence operations that challenge the sovereignty of countries in the region. By including family members, the US intends to increase the personal impact of these measures.

The State Department confirmed that visa restrictions have already been imposed on 26 individuals under the expanded policy. These actions are being carried out under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows denial of entry to those considered threats to US foreign policy or national security. However, authorities have not disclosed names, nationalities, or details of the entities involved, keeping the scope of the policy deliberately broad.
