Indian-origin US Congressman Ro Khanna has indicated that he is seriously considering a run for the White House in the 2028 presidential election, saying he believes he has a “unique” perspective to offer on key domestic and international issues.
Khanna’s remarks came after a recent visit to the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where he said he was detained for around 90 minutes by a group of armed Israeli settlers while visiting a Palestinian village that had reportedly been affected by recent settler violence.
Describing the experience as deeply unsettling, Khanna said the settlers, carrying US-made M4 rifles, blocked his vehicle while the Israeli military allegedly failed to intervene. Reflecting on the incident, he said it gave him a glimpse of the challenges faced daily by Palestinians living under occupation.
Speaking about his political future, Khanna said he is “strongly considering” entering the 2028 presidential race and suggested that his experience in the West Bank would shape an important part of his campaign.
“I have something unique to offer about the injustices of Palestinians. I’m going to go to every corner of America, regardless of whether I run or not, and tell their stories and tell the story of what is happening in the West Bank,” he said.
Khanna’s position reflects a broader shift within sections of the Democratic Party, where progressive leaders have become increasingly critical of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack and the subsequent conflict.
In addition to his foreign policy views, Khanna said his potential presidential campaign would focus on economic opportunity, technological innovation and building a multiracial democracy. He has outlined plans to expand access to the AI-driven economy, strengthen workers’ economic participation and improve affordability through healthcare and childcare reforms.
“I represent the economic future, and I have a clear roadmap to ensure every part of this country has a stake in that future,” Khanna said during a recent discussion on his vision for America.
Despite his growing national profile, Khanna would likely face strong competition if he enters the Democratic primary. Several early surveys have shown former Vice President Kamala Harris leading potential candidates, while California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are also viewed as prominent contenders.
Khanna has not officially announced his candidacy, but his recent comments have fuelled speculation that he could join the race for the Democratic nomination ahead of the 2028 US presidential election.
