Actor Aamir Khan has spoken publicly for the first time about education reformer and activist Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike, expressing concern for his health while also putting to rest the long-standing belief that the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots was inspired by Wangchuk’s life. The actor’s remarks came during the closing ceremony of the London Indian Film Festival, where he attended a special screening of his Oscar-nominated film Lagaan.

Addressing the media, Aamir said he was deeply concerned about Wangchuk’s well-being as the activist continues his indefinite fast at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. “All of us are very concerned for his health and his life. We hope it ends well. All of us are hoping that he ends his fast,” the actor said, expressing hope for a peaceful resolution.

During the interaction, Aamir also dismissed the widely circulated claim that his iconic character Phunsukh Wangdu in 3 Idiots was based on Sonam Wangchuk. Calling it a “misconception,” the actor clarified that neither he nor the filmmakers were aware of Wangchuk when the film was being developed. According to Aamir, the story and character were conceived independently and had no direct connection to the activist’s life.

The clarification comes days after actor Omi Vaidya, who portrayed the memorable character Chatur in 3 Idiots, urged people to support Wangchuk and stated that the activist had inspired Aamir’s character in the film. Responding to those remarks, Aamir firmly said, “Chatur is wrong,” adding that director Rajkumar Hirani, writer Abhijat Joshi, and the entire creative team had not known Wangchuk while making the film.

Despite distancing the film from Wangchuk’s life, Aamir was quick to acknowledge the activist’s contributions, stating that his work deserves recognition on its own merit. The actor emphasised that Wangchuk’s achievements and efforts for education and social causes remain significant regardless of any association with the film.

Aamir’s statement has now clarified one of Bollywood’s most enduring myths while shifting attention back to the activist’s ongoing hunger strike and concerns surrounding his health. The actor’s remarks have sparked fresh discussions online, with fans appreciating both his clarification and his message of concern for Wangchuk’s safety.
