The demands of modern life may be placing unprecedented pressure on the human brain, according to a new study by researchers in Singapore, who argue that many of today’s mental health challenges stem from a mismatch between the environment humans evolved in and the one they now inhabit.
The review, published in the journal Behavioral Sciences, suggests that the human brain developed over hundreds of thousands of years to function in small, close-knit communities where people dealt with immediate, familiar threats. Today’s world, however, is vastly different, with crowded cities, constant digital connectivity, social media, and continuous comparison with others creating conditions the brain may not be naturally equipped to manage.

According to the researchers, this “evolutionary mismatch” could help explain why so many people experience chronic stress, anxiety, loneliness and emotional exhaustion.
Rather than viewing these mental health struggles solely as individual problems, the study argues they may also be natural responses to environments that differ dramatically from those humans evolved to navigate.
The researchers suggest that while human society has changed rapidly over the past few centuries, the human brain has not evolved at the same pace, making it more vulnerable to the psychological pressures of modern living.
The Rise of a ‘Polycrisis’
The study also highlights what researchers describe as a growing “polycrisis”—a situation where multiple large-scale global challenges overlap and intensify one another.
These include:
- Climate change
- Economic uncertainty
- Global pandemics
- Rapid technological advancements, including artificial intelligence (AI)
According to the researchers, these combined pressures create an environment of constant uncertainty, competition and insecurity, increasing the likelihood of burnout while negatively affecting overall mental wellbeing.
Cities and Digital Platforms Could Be Redesigned
The researchers believe that improving mental health may require more than individual coping strategies. They argue that cities, workplaces and online platforms should be designed to better align with human psychological needs.
Among the changes suggested are:
- Expanding green spaces in urban areas
- Creating less overwhelming city environments
- Designing digital platforms that reduce unhealthy social comparison and excessive competition
- Promoting environments that encourage meaningful social connections
They say such changes could help reduce psychological stress and better support the way humans naturally think, interact and process information.
More Research Needed
While the findings present an important perspective on modern mental health, the researchers acknowledge that additional real-world studies are needed to further test the evolutionary mismatch theory.
Even so, they believe understanding the gap between human evolution and modern lifestyles could play a key role in shaping future public health policies.
By creating environments that work with human psychology rather than against it, policymakers, employers and technology companies may be able to help reduce stress, improve wellbeing and foster healthier societies in the years ahead.
