Living with Migraine can be challenging, with intense headaches often disrupting daily life. However, simple lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of attacks, according to an AIIMS-trained neurologist.
Dr Priyanka Sehrawat has shared practical tips to help manage migraines and improve overall well-being.
1. Don’t Skip Breakfast
Starting the day on an empty stomach can trigger migraines. Eating a timely and balanced breakfast helps maintain stable energy levels and prevents sudden headaches.
2. Stay Well Hydrated
Dehydration is a common trigger. Drinking around 2–3 litres of water daily can help keep migraines at bay.
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Being overweight or obese can increase migraine frequency. Managing weight through a balanced diet and exercise can reduce symptoms.
4. Limit Alcohol and Smoking
Alcohol and nicotine are known triggers for severe headaches. Reducing or avoiding them can help prevent migraine episodes.
5. Follow Good Sleep Hygiene
Irregular sleep patterns can disrupt the body’s internal clock and trigger migraines. Getting 7–8 hours of sleep daily and maintaining a fixed sleep schedule is crucial.
6. Manage Stress Levels
Stress is a major contributor to migraines. Practicing relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing can help control triggers.
7. Identify and Avoid Triggers
Certain foods, strong smells, bright lights, or screen exposure may trigger migraines. Keeping track of personal triggers can help prevent future attacks.
