The Aam Aadmi Party has emerged as the leading force in Punjab’s local body elections, securing a strong lead over rivals Congress, SAD

May 29, 2026: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as the dominant force in Punjab’s local body elections, securing a strong lead across urban local bodies and gaining a significant political boost ahead of the next Assembly polls. The results are being seen as an important electoral test in a state that remains crucial to the party’s national ambitions.

According to the latest figures, results have been declared for 1,735 of the 1,977 wards in Punjab. AAP is leading with 850 wards, followed by the Indian National Congress with 342 wards. The Shiromani Akali Dal has secured 165 wards, while the Bharatiya Janata Party stands at 131. The Bahujan Samaj Party has won six wards, while independents and others account for 241.

Reacting to the results, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh criticised the BJP, calling it the “ED Party” and claiming that despite political strategies and alleged defections, the party failed to make gains in Punjab’s civic polls. Voting was held across 102 urban local bodies, including major municipal corporations such as Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala and Pathankot, with a voter turnout of 63.94 per cent. Counting was conducted under tight security arrangements, with officials supervising the process across counting centres in the state.
