Amid reports of a growing rebellion within the Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee has urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

June 14, 2026: The Trinamool Congress has stepped up efforts to counter reports of an internal split, with party leader Abhishek Banerjee writing to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and requesting that no separate faction of the party be recognised in Parliament. The move comes amid speculation that a group of TMC MPs is seeking independent recognition in the Lok Sabha. Banerjee maintained that the party remains united and warned that any attempt to create a parallel group could invite action under anti-defection laws.

In his letter as TMC Parliamentary Party Leader and National General Secretary, Banerjee argued that the All India Trinamool Congress can only be represented through its officially authorised leadership and whip. He cited constitutional provisions and Supreme Court judgments to contend that rival groups cannot be formed within a recognised political party. He also urged the Speaker to deny any official status, facilities or recognition to any breakaway faction and allow the TMC to present its case before any decision is taken.

The development follows a meeting between several TMC MPs and Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi. After the meeting, party leaders reiterated that the TMC is an indivisible political organisation and said any attempt to form a separate parliamentary group would violate constitutional and parliamentary norms. With reports of a dissident camp continuing to circulate, the party leadership has moved quickly to reinforce its authority and prevent any challenge to its position in Parliament.
