Fresh tensions between Rahul Gandhi and Pinarayi Vijayan have highlighted growing differences within the INDIA bloc

June 14, 2026: The INDIA bloc is facing renewed questions over its unity after a public exchange between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and senior CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan. The controversy comes at a time when Rahul Gandhi has been advocating stronger opposition coordination, even as signs of disagreement among alliance partners continue to emerge. Earlier, both the DMK and AAP skipped a key INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi, while differences also surfaced over responses to the Trinamool Congress’ electoral setback in West Bengal.

The latest row began after Pinarayi Vijayan criticised Rahul Gandhi’s political approach, saying it often ends up benefiting the BJP rather than strengthening the opposition alliance. Responding to reports that Rahul had joked about not hugging Vijayan due to their rivalry in Kerala, the former Kerala Chief Minister said he was unconcerned about such remarks. However, he pointedly referred to Rahul Gandhi’s widely discussed hug with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, arguing that it reflected a particular political message and outlook toward the INDIA alliance.

Congress leader KC Venugopal hit back strongly, accusing the CPI(M) of targeting Rahul Gandhi to distract from its own electoral decline. The disagreement follows Rahul Gandhi’s remarks at the June 8 INDIA bloc meeting, where he criticised parties such as the TMC, SP and RJD for relying on outdated political strategies. He urged opposition leaders to move beyond conventional electoral politics and adopt a broader resistance movement against what he described as threats to democratic institutions. The exchange has further intensified speculation about growing divisions within the opposition alliance.
