Bharatiya Janata Party registers a sweeping victory in Assam, with Himanta Biswa Sarma set to return for a third consecutive term.
May 4, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party has secured a decisive mandate in Assam, winning and leading in 82 out of 126 seats, ensuring a third straight term in power. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called it a historic victory and thanked voters, assuring them that the party would fulfil its promises. The BJP alone has crossed the majority mark, while its NDA allies have further boosted the coalition’s tally.
According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 69 of the 90 seats it contested and is leading in 13 more. Allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples Front added to the alliance’s strength, taking the combined count past 100 seats. The Congress-led opposition, despite contesting as a united bloc, managed only 19 seats, performing worse than in 2021.
The results reflect a mix of factors, including central policies under Narendra Modi, Sarma’s leadership, welfare schemes, and identity politics. While BJP leaders celebrated the mandate, analysts noted that opposition parties like Congress and AIUDF struggled to retain their support base. With this victory, BJP is set to continue its governance model in Assam, further strengthening its foothold in the Northeast.
