Ceiling Fan Falls On Patient During Treatment At GTB Hospital

The patient was injured after a ceiling fan allegedly fell on his bed during treatment, while a nursing officer also sustained injuries.

July 19, 2026: A 42-year-old patient admitted to the emergency ward of Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital died hours after a ceiling fan allegedly fell on him while he was undergoing treatment on Saturday night. The patient, identified as Md Akbar, had been admitted on July 18 with complaints of hypertension, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia, according to hospital staff familiar with the case.

The incident reportedly took place around 9.30 pm in Emergency Ward 27 while a nursing officer was treating Akbar. According to hospital staff, the ceiling fan detached and fell directly onto the patient’s bed, injuring both Akbar and the nursing officer. The patient was declared dead at around 12.16 am on Sunday. His death certificate listed hypertension, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia as the cause of death.

On Sunday morning, Akbar’s family members gathered at the hospital and questioned the quality of treatment, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident. Hospital authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the ceiling fan collapse or the allegations raised by the family.
