A heated confrontation between TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh and party chief whip Sheikh Akhruzzaman
July 22, 2026: Unprecedented scenes unfolded in the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday after a heated confrontation between Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Kunal Ghosh and the party’s chief whip Sheikh Akhruzzaman disrupted House proceedings. The dispute reportedly began over speaking time during a discussion on the Home Affairs departments, with Ghosh alleging that his name had been deliberately omitted from the list of speakers. The verbal argument quickly escalated, creating chaos inside the Assembly.
As Akhruzzaman began addressing the House, Ghosh walked towards the chief whip’s microphone and confronted him. The disagreement intensified, with reports of pushing, pulling and attempts to physically restrain one another. Despite repeated appeals from Speaker Rathindranath Basu asking Ghosh to return to his seat, the disruption continued. When order could not be restored, the Speaker directed marshals to remove Ghosh from the Assembly for breaching House discipline. Minister Shankar Ghosh reportedly tried to calm the situation before the marshals escorted Ghosh out.
The incident drew sharp criticism from the state’s leadership. After Ghosh’s removal, the Chief Minister described the scenes as unprecedented in the history of the Assembly and condemned the MLA’s conduct as “impolite” and “unparliamentary.” The Chief Minister said such behaviour had no place in a democratic institution and stressed the importance of maintaining dignity and decorum during legislative proceedings.
