The Delhi High Court has directed the Wrestling Federation of India to decide within two weeks

July 6, 2026: The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to decide within two weeks on the show-cause notice issued to wrestler Vinesh Phogat. The order came while disposing of Phogat’s petition challenging the May 9 notice and the WFI’s Asian Games selection criteria, which limited eligibility to medal winners from 2025 while excluding earlier performances. The court directed the federation to take a final decision on the pending notice within the stipulated time.

The WFI had alleged that Phogat failed to complete the mandatory six-month notice period required for athletes returning from retirement under United World Wrestling anti-doping rules. The federation also accused her of indiscipline, declared her ineligible for domestic competitions, and described the incident that led to her disqualification at the 2024 Paris Olympics as a “national embarrassment.” During the hearing, Phogat’s counsel argued that the matter involved important legal questions and sought an early decision on the notice.

The WFI informed the court that Phogat had already been allowed to participate in the Asian Games selection trials, though she failed to qualify, making some of her earlier pleas irrelevant. The federation also acknowledged issuing another show-cause notice on June 17 regarding her conduct during the trials. Separately, Phogat recently disclosed that she was among the six women wrestlers who filed sexual harassment complaints against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and was one of the leading faces of the wrestlers’ protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in 2023.
